Switzerland turned their fortunes around to not only finish third in Group A but also knock out the “dark horses” Turkey from Euro 2020.
Needing a win in Baku to stand any chance of progression, the Swiss turned up in the do-or-die game to finish third in Group A. They finish behind Italy and Wales to give themselves a good chance of qualifying for the Euro 2020 knockout stages.
Turkey, on the other hand, have proven to be the biggest failures of the tournament. They were termed as the “dark horses” of this year’s competition. The side failed to register a single point as they lost all three of their games.
Xherdan Shaqiri bagged a brace after Haris Seferovic opened the scoring for the side. Steven Zuber assisted all three of Switzerland’s goals, proving to be too hot to handle for the Turks.
Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer had a top-notch game as he produced a string of good saves. They needed him to keep a much-improved Turkey at bay, in the first half.
At the other end, Ugurcan Cakir was just as impressive, as he proved to be a wall in Turkey’s goal. Switzerland could have had more goals if it were not for the terrific display by the stopper.
“Dark horses” Turkey in shambles
Turkey were able to score their first goal of the tournament as Irfan Can Kahveci smashed home a long-range drive to briefly narrow the score to 2-1. However, Shaqiri put the game beyond doubt in the 68th minute to give Switzerland hopes of qualifying for the pre-quarterfinals.
Switzerland now have to wait for the group games to be completed to see if they will be one of the four third-placed teams to make the last 16 of UEFA Euro 2020.
