Copa America 2021 Group B: Venezuela 0-1 Peru

Peru overcame a tricky test against Venezuela to win 1-0 in the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America on Sunday, to seal their place in the quarterfinals of the competition.

This result ensured Peru qualified from Group B in second place behind hosts Brazil. Colombia and Ecuador are the other two teams to secure a last 8 berth.

Venezuela have been eliminated, finishing bottom of Group B at the 2021 Copa America. The side failed to register a win in the competition this time.

Ecuador edged above Venezuela in the group by managing to claim a draw against Brazil. This ended Brazil’s 10-game winning streak but the hosts had already secured the top spot in the group.

Peru’s AndrĂ© Carrillo gave his team the win when he scored in the 48th minute. The Al Hilal attacker latched onto a corner kick from close range to secure the three points.

Carillo was the hero once again having done so in the previous tie against Ecuador to salvage a point back then.

The win ended a run of draws between the two sides. The last time one of these teams won a game was back in 2015.

The quarter-final matchups will be decided on after the final round of Group A fixtures. Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay have already guaranteed their place in the last eight but their positions depend on the final results.

Argentina should secure the top spot in the group. They face Bolivia who have already been eliminated and have lost all their games.

Paraguay and Uruguay will battle it out to secure second place in the group. If Paraguay lose, Chile will have to face Brazil so there is lots to play for still.
