Legendary Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure has been appointed as an assistant coach at Russian Premier League club FK Akhmat.

The 38-year-old began his coaching career at the Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk in February 2021.

He left the position after four months at Donetsk as the club narrowly avoided relegation as they finished in second-last of 14 teams.

The former FC Barcelona and Manchester City star has been handed a one-year deal that will see him at Akhmat for the 2021/22 season.

Toure will work under head coach Andrei Talalayev, who has been in charge of the team since July 2020.

FK Akhmat make official club statement

“Former footballer Yaya Toure has joined the coaching staff of the Thunderbirds. Head coach Andrey Talalaev will determine his duties as an assistant,” a club statement read.

“The contract with the specialist is calculated until the end of the 2021-22 season.”

“Yaya has played for teams such as Beveren, Metalurh Donetsk, Monaco, Olympiacos, Barcelona and Manchester City.”

“We welcome Yaya Toure and say to him: ‘welcome to Ahmat.’”

Toure is widely considered to be one of the greatest African players of all time having been voted the CAF African Footballer of the Year for four consecutive years – 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

He also led his nation Ivory Coast to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015.
