Juventus FC

juventus logoFounded in the year 1897, Juventus are one of the oldest clubs in Italian football and were one of the founding members of the Serie A in 1929. They played in every season of the Seria A till date, apart from the 2006/07 season.

Aside from being one of the oldest teams, Juventus is also the most successful club in Italian football, they have won the Italian Championship/Serie A a record 30 times. In fact, they are the current Serie A champions after winning the 2013/14 season with ease.

Juventus play their home matches at the Juventus Stadium in Turin. They are currently managed by Massimiliano Allegri and the club captain is Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus missed one Serie A season in 2006/07 because the club was involved in a match fixing scandal that came to light in 2006 as a result of which they were demoted to Serie B.

Juventus have won the Coppa Italia 9 times with the last one coming in 1994/95. They have also had reasonable success in European competitions winning the Champions League twice in 1984/85 and 1995/96, The UEFA Cup three times in 1976/77, 1989/90 and 1992/93 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983.

FC Internazionale Milano

inter milan logoFC Internazionale Milano, or more popularly known as Inter Milan was founded in the year 1908. Inter is the only club to have played every season of the Serie A till date.

Inter plays their home matches at the San Siro Stadium which they share with their arch rivals AC Milan. Inter vs AC Milan is one of the fiercest rivalries in club football and the matches between these two Italian Giants are called “Derby Della Madonnina”.

Inter is one of the most successful teams in Italy winning the Italian national title/Serie A title 18 times, 1st in 1909/10 and the last one till date coming in the 2009/10 season.

Inter has won five consecutive Serie A titles from the 2005/06 season to the 2009/10 season. The other domestic titles won by Inter include 7 Coppa Italia and 5 Supercoppa Italiana titles.

Inter has also won three Champions League titles in their history with the most recent one being in 2009/10. In the 2009/10 season under the management of Jose Mourinho, Inter went on to win the Serie A title, Champions League and the Coppa Italia thereby becoming the first Italian club to win a treble.

The team is currently managed by Roberto Mancini and the club captain is Andrea Ranocchia. Internazionale finished 5th in 2013/14 Serie A season.

AC Milan

AC Milan logoFounded in the year 1899, A.C. Milan or simple referred to as “Milan” play their home matches at the San Siro Stadium which they share with their in-city rivals Inter Milan.

Milan has played in every season of the Serie A execpt for two seasons in the early 80’s (1980/81 and 1982/83). Milan is one of the most successful clubs in Italy winning the Italian National title/Serie A 18 times with the most recent one coming in the 2010/11 season and the Coppa Italia title five times.

The match’s between Milan and their arch rival Inter Milan are called “Derby Della Madonnina” and is one of the most popular derbies in world football. In European competitions AC Milan are the most successful among the Italian clubs winning the Champions League a total of 7 times with the first one coming in 1962/63 and the last one till date coming in the 2006/07 season when they beat Liverpool in the final.

The team is currently managed by Filippo Inzaghi and the club captain is Riccardo Montolivo. Milan finished 8th in the 2013/14 Serie A season.

Parma FC

parma fc logoFounded in the year 1913, Parma FC was initially called Verdi FC. The club plays their home matches at the Stadio Ennio Tardini and is currently managed by Roberto Donadoni who has been with them since 2012.

Parma has failed to win a Serie A title till date but has had reasonable success in other domestic competitions and in Europe as well. They have won 3 Coppa Italia titles (last one till date in 2001/02) and One Supercopa Italiana title (1999) domestically.

When it comes to European competitions Parma has won 2 UEFA Cups, One European Super Cup and One UEFA Cup Winners Cup. In the 1998/99 season they managed to win the double of UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia.

Their best finish in Serie A came in the 1996/97 season when they finished runners-up two points behind champions Juventus.

Parma finished 6th in the 2013/14 Serie A season but was banned from playing in Europe for the 2014/15 season as they failed to pay the taxes on time (A point was also reduced).

The current club captain is Alessandro Lucarelli.

Empoli FC

empoli logoFounded in the year 1920, Empoli FC play their home matches at the Stadio Carlo Castellani and is currently managed by Maurizio Sarri who has been with them since 2012.

Empoli FC tasted Serie A football for the first time in 1986 and since then for the past three decades has jumped between Serie A and Serie B. The club is best known for the developing young talents. Empoli hasn’t won any major trophies till date.

The team finished 2nd in the 2013/14 Serie B Season and were promoted to the Serie A for the 2014/15 season.

U.S. Sassuolo Calcio

saussolo logoU.S. Sassuolo Calcio or simply “Sassuolo” was founded in the year 1922 and plays their home games at the Mapei Stadium-Citta del Tricolore.

Sassuolo played in the Serie A for the first time in the 2013/14 season. Sassuolo won the 2012/13 Serie B title thereby earning promotion to Italian football’s top flight for the first time.

In their first season in the Serie A Sassuolo finished 17th thereby avoiding getting relegated in their first season.

They team is currently managed by Eusebio Di Francesco and the club captain is Franceso Magnanelli.

 U.S.Citta di Palermo

cita di palermo logoU.S.Citta di Palermo or commonly known as Palermo was founded in the year 1900 and plays their home matches at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

The club was initially known as “Anglo Panormitan Athletic and Football Club” but after several name changes through the years finally took on its current name in 1987.

Palermo hasn’t won any major titles till date but have finished runners-up in the Coppa Italia three times the most recent of them being in 2010/11 when they lost to Inter Milan in the finals.

Palermo won the 2013/14 Serie B title thereby getting promoted to the Serie A for the 2014/15 season. The team is currently managed by Giuseppe Iachini and the club captain is Edgar Barreto.

AC Cesena

AC-Cesena logoFounded in the year 1946 AC Cesena’s first season in the Serie A came in 1973. Since then Cesena has moved to and fro between the Serie A and Serie B.

Cesena plays their home matches at Stadio Dino Manuzzi; they are currently managed by Domenico Di Carlo. Cesena’s highest finish in the Serie A came in the 1975/76 season when they finished 6th overall.

Cesena hasn’t won any major titles till date but has finished as runners-up in Serie B three times. Cesena finished 4th in the 2013/14 Serie B season and qualified for the 2014/15 Serie A season after winning the promotion play-off tournament.

AS Roma

AS_Roma_logoFounded in the year 1927, AS Roma or simply known as Roma plays their home matches at Stadio Olimpico in Rome and is one of the clubs with more supporters in Italy.

Roma has played in all but one season of the Serie A till date; they missed the 1951/52 season. Roma has an impressive resume domestically, Roma has won the Serie A title three times, Coppa Italia nine times and the Supercopa Italiana title twice.

The last time they won the Serie A was in the 2000/01 season. In European competitions Roma haven’t had much luck, they have finished as runners-up in both Champions League and the UEFA Cup but have never won either competition.

The team is currently managed by Rudi Garcia and finished as runners-up in the 2013/14 Serie A season finishing well behind eventual winners Juventus.

Hellas Verona FC

Hellas_Verona_FC_logo.svgFounded in the year 1903, Hellas Verona or simply referred to as “Verona” plays their home matches at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi. Verona has won the Serie A title on one occasion way back in the 1984/85 season.

They have also finished as runners-up in the Coppa Italia three times but have failed to win the competition till date. Verona has a strong rivalry with Chievo Verno and the matches between the two are called “Derby Della Scala”.

Verona finished 10th in the 2013/14 Serie A season; they are currently managed by Andrea Mandorlini (Since 2010) and team captain is Brazilian Goalkeeper Rafael.

UC Sampdoria

Sampdoria logoUC Sampdoria was formed in the year 1946 after the merger of two clubs “Sampierdarenese” and “Andrea Doria”.

Sampdoria play their home matches at Stadio Luigi Ferraris which they share with rivals Genoa. Sampdoria and Genoa has a strong rivalry and the matches between the two are called “Derby Della Lanterna”.

Sampdoria has won the Serie A title once back in the 1990/91 season. They have also had a good time in the Coppa Italia competition winning the title four times, the last of them coming in 1994.

Sampdoria has tasted success in Europe, they have won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup once and finished as runners-up in the 1991/92 Champions league tournament where they lost 1-0 against FC Barcelona in the finals.

Sampdoria are currently managed by Sinisa Mihajlovic and the club captain is Daniele Gastaldello.

Cagliari Calcio

cagliari logoFounded in the year 1920, Cagliari plays their home matches at Stadio Sant’Elia.

Cagliari has been champions of Italy on one occasion winning the 1969/70 Serie A title but apart from their lone Serie A title Cagliari don’t have anything else to show for as their achievements.

They did reach the UEFA Cup Semi-finals on one occasion (1993/94) but got knocked out by fellow Italian club Inter despite winning one of the legs.

Cagliari is currently managed by Gianfranco Zola, who has been in the job since Dec, 2014. The current team captain is Daniele Conti.

Cagliari finished 15th in the 2013/14 Serie A season.

SSC Napoli

napoli logoFounded in the year 1926, Napoli plays their home matches at Stadio San Paolo and is currently managed by Rafael Benitez who has been with them since 2013.

Napoli has had several name changes in its history but the Current name of SSC Napoli was fixed in 2004. Napoli has an impressive list of trophies to their credit; they have won the Serie A title twice in the 1986/87 and 1989/90 season.

They also finished as runners-up in the Serie A on several occasions, the last of those second place finishes came in the 2012/13 season. The other domestic trophies won by them include 5 Coppa Italia titles and two Supercopa Italiana titles.

Roma are the current champions of both the Coppa Italia (Beat Fiorentina in the final) and Supercopa Italiana (Beat Inter on Penalties).

When it comes to European competitions Napoli’s lone trophy comes in the form of the UEFA Cup which they won in 1988/89 by beating German club VFB Stuttgart in the final.

The club finished third in the 2013/14 Serie A season, the current team captain is Marek Hamsik.

AC Chievo Verona

Chievo-verona-logoAC Chievo Verona or simply Chievo was founded in the year 1929 and plays their home matches at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi which they share with their in-city rivals Hellas Verona.

Even though the club was founded in year 1929 it was officially recognized only in 1931. Chievo hasn’t won any major trophies till date.

The club finished 16th in the 2013/14 Serie A season. Chievo are currently managed by Rolando Maran and the team captain is Sergio Pellissier.

Torino FC

Torino_FC_Logo.svgTorino FC or simply referred to as “Toro” was founded in the year 1906 and plays their home matches at Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

Toro were first known as FC Torino but after several name changes through the years the current name of Torino FC was fixed in September, 2005.

Torino has won 7 Italian National titles in their history winning the first one in 1927/28 and the final one till date in 1975/76. Out of their 7 league titles 5 of them were back to back wins starting from the 1942/43 season to the 1948/49 season.

Torino has also won the Coppa Italia three times, the last of those coming in 1992/93. They haven’t had much success in Europe but have been runners-up in the UEFA Cup on one occasion in 1991/92 when they lost to Ajax in the final.

The team is currently managed by Giampiero Ventura and the club captain is Kamil Glik. Torino finished 7th in the 2013/14 Serie A season.

Atalanta BC

AtalantaBC.svgFounded in the year 1907, Atlanta BC plays their home matches at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia. They are currently managed by Stefano Colantuono who has been with them since 2010. The club captain is Gianpaolo Bellini.

Atlanta has won the Coppa Italia once way back in the 1962/63; they have also won the Serie B title 6 times with the last of them coming in 2010/11.

Since winning promotion in the 2010/11 Atlanta have remained in the Serie A and finished 11th in the 2013/14 season.

 

SS Lazio

lazio logoFounded in the year 1900, SS Lazio or simply known as “Lazio” plays their home matches at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, they share the stadium with rivals AS Roma.

SS Lazio has enjoyed boastful success in their history. They have been Serie A champions on two occasions once in 1973/74 and the second and last time till date in 1999/00. Lazio have also won the Coppa Italia 6 times with the most recent of them coming in 2012/13.

Lazio’s lone European trophy comes in the form of UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup which it won in 1998/99 after beating Spanish club Mallorca 2-1 in the final.

The derby matches between Lazio and Roma are called “Derby Della Capitale”. The team is currently managed by Stefano Pioli and the club captain is Stefano Mauri.

Lazio finished 9th in the 2013/14 Serie A season.

Genoa CFC

Genoa_cfc logoFounded in the year 1893, Genoa is one of the oldest clubs in Italian football and plays their home matches at Stadio Luigi Ferraris which they share with their rivals Sampdoria.

Genoa has won 9 Italian National Championships but all of them came before the formation of the Serie A in 1929. In the first season of the Serie A they finished as the runners-up and have not challenged for the title since then.

Genoa also has one Coppa Italia title to their credit which they won back in 1936/37.

The club is currently managed by Gian Piero Gasperini and the club captain is Luca Antonelli.

Genoa CFC finished 14th in the 2013/14 Serie A season.

ACF Fiorentina

Ffiorentina logoounded in the year 1926, Fiorentina has played in the Serie A for most of its history and plays their home matches at Stadio Artermio Franchi since 1931.

Fiorentina has been Serie A champions on two occasions, once in 1955/56 and the second/last time till date in 1968/69. Apart from their Serie A titles Fiorentina have also won the Coppa Italia 6 times the last of which came in 2000/01.

Fiorentina has tasted reasonable success in Europe; they have won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup once in 1960/61. They have also reached both the Champions League and UEFA Cup finals once each but lost both the times to Real Madrid (1956/57) and Juventus (1989/90) respectively.

The team is currently managed by Vincenzo Montella and the club captain is Manuel Pasqual.

Udinese Calcio

Udinese_calcio logoFounded in the year 1896, Udinese are one of the oldest clubs in Italy in fact they are the second oldest club in Italy behind Genoa CFC.

Udinese play their home matches at Stadio Friuli and is currently managed by Andrea Stramaccioni. The current club captain is Antonio Di Natale.

Udinese haven’t won any major till date. They finished 13th in the 2013/2014 Serie A season.
