Is Mourinho’s second spell with Chelsea turning out to be flop?
During Mourinho’s first spell with Chelsea he declared himself the special one and his time with them made sure that he was befitting of that tag. In his first season itself Chelsea won the league cup, made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League and won the Premier League title comfortably finishing with 95 points and conceding just 15 goals all season.
It was also Chelsea’s first league title in 50 years, Mourinho was going on to cement his place as a Chelsea legend after winning the League title again in the next season and thereby winning Chelsea’s first back-to-back league title.
In his third season he won the league cup and the FA cup and narrowly missed out on winning a third consecutive league title finishing second to Manchester United. Mourinho left the club at the start of the 2007/08 season but he left as the most successful manager in Chelsea FC’s history winning 6 trophies in 3 seasons.
Mourinho’s only failure at Chelsea had been his failure to win the Champions League title with them losing out in the semi-finals against Liverpool in the 2004/05, losing to Barcelona in the round of 16 in the 2005/06 season and again losing in the semi-finals to Liverpool in the 2006/07 season.
In his second spell with Chelsea Mourinho one and only aim has been to secure the Champions League which has eluded him while at Chelsea. Mourinho failed at the Semi’s again last season losing to Atletico Madrid.
This season however they were knocked out of the competition by a PSG team that played with 10 men for much of the second leg. The defeat itself was not damaging but the manner in which they lost to PSG was simply said ugly, they were totally outplayed by a team with just 10 men.
To be honest Chelsea has had a great season thus far they have already secured the League Cup trophy and are leading the Premier League by 5 points with a game in hand to 2nd placed Manchester City, but an exit from the Champions League at this stage of the competition was a big question mark to the brand of football that Chelsea have played under Mourinho.
Mourinho has to wait another year now to try and lift the Champions League with The Blues and it is only Mourinho who could get away with such a poor Champions League performance with Chelsea and it says a lot about the faith that both the fans and management have on him.
Verdict: – It would be right to term it as a flop just yet, if Chelsea doesn’t end the season as league Champions then yes – Mourinho’s second spell with Chelsea is indeed a flop.
