“Manchester United need a top-class striker after Sunday’s tactically brave performance at Chelsea was undermined by a lack of quality up front”, says Jamie Carragher.

Manchester United have failed to score in 6 consecutive Premier League matches against their “Big 6” rivals after Sunday’s draw at Chelsea and Jamie Carragher talks about United’s need for a world-class striker signing.

United extended their unbeaten away Premier League run to 20 games with a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in West London, but the stalemate saw Manchester United failing to score once again against the top teams in the league.

Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the 6-1 destruction at Old Trafford by Tottenham is the only goal that United have managed to score in the 7 games played so far against the Big 6 teams of the Premier League.

Although United are currently second in the Premier League, they are 12 points adrift off Manchester City who are running away with the league and have won 20 consecutive games across all competitions.

Liverpool legend and now, pundit Jamie Carragher believes that the Red Devils need top quality in their striking department as Anthony Martial is just not good enough. Edinson Cavani is also 34 so does not have too many years left, although he has been really good since his arrival.

Manchester United need Harry Kane or Erling Braut Haaland to really become a force to reckon with. Solskjaer’s side has been extremely wasteful in front of goal this season and Bruno Fernandes being the club’s leading goal scorer speaks volumes of the lack of scoring from the number 9 players.

“I wouldn’t describe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a defensive manager. This is a guy who has played for Manchester United in those attacking teams over the years,” said Carragher.

“But right now, I think Manchester United have a quality issue. When the ball actually goes up to the front players, is there enough quality there? They are the top scorers in the Premier League, but have they got that player who can score goals in decisive games and take them to the league title?”, he added.

“People talk about United needing a right winger, and they do, but they need a centre forward more. If United had Rashford on the left, a new centre-forward, and Greenwood supplementing a new right winger, that would address the lack of quality.”

“You look at the options. In this country it’s Harry Kane, or Erling Haaland who is coming through. You wonder whether they are players Manchester United should be targeting.”

Erling Braut Haaland has played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when the Norwegian was in charge of Molde back in 2017. Haaland shares a good relationship with his fellow countryman and former boss, and Solskjaer had recently mentioned that he has been in touch with the young Borussia Dortmund striker.

It will be a jackpot for Manchester United if they manage to sign the dynamic Dortmund duo of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland from Germany.
