Where are they now?
7th – Liverpool – 24 games – 39 points – Goal Difference (+6)
5th – Tottenham – 24 games – 43 points – Goal Difference (+6)
Liverpool
Liverpool come in this match after a frustrating 0-0 draw vs Everton on Saturday. They were the better team but couldn’t get past a resilient Everton team.
Last season Liverpool were scoring for fun winning matches 4-3, 5-3, 5-1 etc… But after the departure of a certain Luis Suarez the team has found it difficult to find the back of the net continuously.
Liverpool is unbeaten in 8 heading into Tuesday’s clash versus a fellow top 4 contender Tottenham. Liverpool has been in impressive form versus the North London Club having a score line of 12-0 against them in the last three matches combined.
If Liverpool were to win this match vs Spurs it will be their 5th consecutive win against them. Liverpool is the only team in the Premier League who are unbeaten in the league this calendar year.
Liverpool’s defense was much criticized at the first few weeks of this season as they were leaking goals but they have improved and have kept consecutive clean sheets in their last four league matches.
There will be no Raheem Sterling and Lucas Leiva for Liverpool as the former suffered a foot injury versus Everton and the latter still hasn’t recovered from his thigh injury.
Tottenham
Spurs are flying high coming into this match. They came from behind against fellow top 4 contender Arsenal last game winning by 2-1 courtesy of two goals from a young Harry Kane.
Harry Kane has been one of the finds of the season and has so far scored 22 goals this season. In fact he is the highest scorer from the Premier League in all competitions.
The 12 of 22 goals have come in the league and he may well be challenging both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero for the golden boot come the end of the season.
Spurs’ record at Anfield is just miserable winning just 6 games in 71 visits. However Pochettino’s men come into this match full of confidence and with a hunger to win.
A win here will temporarily move them up to the top 3 and might well stay there till next week if other results go their way. If Spurs want to prove themselves to be a Top 4 contender then this is the match they should win.
Spurs have earned 15 points this season from losing positions (best in the league).
Spurs may start with the same 11 that played against Arsenal on Saturday.
Past meeting
Last time these two met Liverpool thrashed Spurs 3-0 with goals from Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and a wonderful individualistic effort from Alberto Moreno. This was also the third straight thrashing that Spurs got at the hand of Liverpool in the past two seasons.
Prediction
Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur – Liverpool to win 4-2 – This should be a high scoring and I can see both Daniel Sturridge and Harry Kane getting on the score sheet.
