As Guardiola reflected on the game, which saw City now going 28 games unbeaten in all competitions, the Spanish tactician was not shy of praising his winger.

“The last games were outstanding. He played really well. He has a special quality,” said Guardiola.

“He is a guy who dances on the pitch. He doesn’t lose balls on the pitch. He makes the extra pass.

“He attracts opponents on the pitch and after, he makes a pass in behind. He makes fantastic crosses. We knew it,” he added.

“At Leicester City, he was outstanding with Jamie Vardy. That’s why we pushed for him. We hope he can continue.”

Riyad Mahrez has become an integral part of this Manchester City side and has significantly contributed to his side’s success during this run of 28 games unbeaten. He has displaced Bernardo Silva permanently in Guardiola’s first-choice team.

Algeria fans will be hoping that their captain can keep this form up as they prepare for the AFCON qualifiers.
