It is official. Bayern Munich is the best football team in the world! The German club becomes only the second team after Barcelona to win the sextuple as they end up winning 6 trophies in 1 year.
Bayern beat Mexican champions Tigres UANL 1-0 in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup with a terrific volley by French World Cup winner, Benjamin Pavard netting the winner.
The German giants won every trophy they participated in this over the football calendar year to achieve an incredible feat. It all started with securing the Bundesliga on 17th June 2020.
Hansi Flick’s side then went on to win the Deutscher (DFB)-Pokal less than a month later on 4th July 2020 as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 to complete the domestic double as striker Robert Lewandowski secured the golden boot for the competition, just like he did in the Bundesliga with an incredible 34 goals.
Bayern Munich was not done yet. They had a treble on their mind as they headed into the UEFA Champions League final after having an unbeaten run up till then. They won all 6 of their group stage games and annihilated Chelsea in the round of 16 by beating them 7-1 on aggregate.
Flick’s side followed that stunning display with the obliteration of Lionel Messi and Barcelona in the quarterfinals as they beat them 8-2! Olympique Lyonnais seemed to be a formality for the Bavarians who then set up a final date with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Kingsley Coman scored the winner on the day to help Bayern with its 6th European cup to go tied with Liverpool. Lewandowski made it a treble of golden boots as he ended up as top scorer in the Champions League as well.
Bayern Munich won its 2nd ever treble in what capped off a stunning year for Robert Lewandowski who was guaranteed to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or but the trophy was scrapped for the year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
On 24th September 2020, Bayern featured against Europa League champions Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup and the favourites did not disappoint.
It was a hard-fought game as the German club found themselves down after conceding a penalty early on in the game but a Leon Goretzka goal sent the match into extra time.
Javi Martinez came on to score with a header to lead Munich to victory over the Spanish side and secure their 4th trophy.
The DFL Supercup was next on Bayern’s card and they faced off against runners up of the Bundesliga and archrivals, Borussia Dortmund on 30th September 2020. Bayern looked on top of things with early goals from Frenchman Corentin Tolisso and German Thomas Muller. Dortmund, however, made sure to come back with goals from Julian Brandt and Erling Braut Haaland to make it 2-2.
Joshua Kimmich, however, scored the decider in strange fashion to lift the Bavarians to their 5th trophy of the season.
Finally, Munich came into the FIFA Club World Cup as firm favourites. The competition was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Bavarians faced Tigres in the final. They defeated the North American champions 1-0 to secure 6 trophies in the year and achieve the unthinkable under Hansi Flick.
Bayern are on course to retain the Bundesliga once again and are likely to win the DFB-Pokal too. The true test, however, will be in retaining the UEFA Champions League and winning the treble once more. Things are looking exciting for Bayern Munich fans and this may be the golden era of the team with the abundance of talent they have got.
