The Netherlands became the second team to secure their spot in the last 16 of Euro 2020 as they beat Austria 2-0 in Amsterdam to win Group C with a game to spare.

Frank de Boer’s side, outclassed the Austrians in front of their home fans at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the Euro 2020 Group C tie.

Dutch star Memphis Depay put the hosts ahead with a neat penalty after David Alaba brought down wing-back Denzel Dumfries. The fullback joined the party by scoring Netherlands’ second from a quick counterattack in the second half.

The Dutch, who failed to qualify for the last two major football tournaments, are into the knockout stages at the European Championship for the first time since 2008.

Austria started their campaign with a 3-1 victory over North Macedonia and have now set up a winner-takes-all tie against Ukraine in Group C’s final game of Euro 2020.

The Netherlands secured a place in the knockout stages at their first major tournament since reaching the semifinals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Depay netted his 27th goal at the international level and has been involved in 27 goals in the past 22 games for his country.

Matthijs de Ligt’s return from a groin injury has made the Dutch backline look much stronger and they will be one of the dark horses going into the knockouts. The Netherlands will await the third-placed finisher from either Group D, E or F in the next round.

Austria meet Ukraine and the Dutch face North Macedonia in the final round of Group C games of Euro 2020, with both matches taking place on Monday.
