Euro 2020 Group F: Hungary 1-1 France
Antoine Griezmann rescued a point for France and denied Hungary one of the big European Championship upsets in Budapest at Euro 2020.
Attila Fiola fired Hungary into the lead just before halftime. He held off the French defence to slot home after a neat one-two with Roland Sallai.
The goal was met by one of the loudest celebrations football has heard as the Puskas Arena went wild. Fiola and his teammates embraced some of the fans in the front row.
World champions France have been tipped by many as the tournament favourites. They dominated the first half, with Kylian Mbappe running the show for the French.
France were disappointing
Les Bleus looked far from their best, although they did come back in the second half.
Substitute Ousmane Dembele hit the post – and then his Barcelona teammate Griezmann equalised in the 66th minute.
Mbappe ran onto Hugo Lloris’ volley down the field before laying it off – with the help of a slight deflection – for Griezmann to slot home from eight yards out.
There was almost late drama when Presnel Kimpembe appeared to be fouled in the box by Sallai – but France were not given a penalty – and Raphael Varane headed wide with the last touch of the game.
France, on four points, have probably done enough to reach the last 16 from the Group of Death (Group F) of Euro 2020. Hungary have also kept their qualification hopes alive.
Germany beat Portugal comprehensively in Munich as they overcame the defending European champions 4-2.
