Denmark set up a last-16 tie with Wales at Euro 2020 after an emotional victory over Russia in Copenhagen. The Danes put 4 goals past the Russians to win 4-1.

It has been just nine days since teammate Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch in their first game of Euro 2020 against Finland.

Eriksen has since been discharged from the hospital and the Danes responded positively on the pitch as emotions would have been running at an all-time high.

Knowing they needed everything to go their way to qualify, Denmark pulled off the victory over the Russians and Belgium did manage to comfortably beat Finland. This meant that the Euro 1992 winners kept their dreams alive following these results.

Russia 1-4 Denmark

Mikkel Damsgaard opened the scoring with a stunning strike from long-range to give Denmark the lead in the first half after 38 minutes.

RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen gave Denmark a 2-0 lead just before the hour mark when as he pounced on a poor backpass from Roman Zobnin that he made Russia pay for.

Artem Dzyuba pulled one back for the Russians from the penalty spot in the 70th minute but what was to follow was exactly what Denmark deserved.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen thumped a shot from long-range that sizzled into the back of the net in the 79th minute to put the home side up 3-1. Joakim Maehle sealed the deal just three minutes later to lead Denmark to a 4-1 victory.

Denmark confirmed their progression as runners-up in Group B of Euro 2020. Russia, who started the night in second place, now have ended the tournament as the last-placed side in the group.
