An own goal by Chile’s Arturo Vidal gave Uruguay a point in a closely fought affair in Group A of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America.

Uruguay found the back of the net for the first time in five outings thanks to Vidal as they were gifted a point due to the mishap at the Copa America.

Chile and Uruguay have won three of the last four Copa America tournaments, but both sides have been severely underperforming in the group stage of this year’s competition.

Uruguay did not have a shot on target in their previous game against Argentina. Chile, on the other hand, somehow managed to pick up a draw against Argentina but really struggled to beat Bolivia 1-0.

Vargas is in red-hot form

Chile were the better side to start the game as they went in front after just 26 minutes thanks to Eduardo Vargas. The forward is in familiar territory as he plays his club football in Brazil’s top flight.

Vargas linked up nicely with Ben Brereton before smashing the ball past veteran Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. It was Vargas’ 14th goal in the tournament and he is always a threat.

Uruguay got a deserved equaliser midway through the second half as they started to find their rhythm. Matias Vecino headed a corner into the six-yard box that led to Luis Suarez grappling with Vidal. Unfortunately for the Chilean midfielder, while jostling against the Atletico Madrid striker, he knocked the ball into the roof of his own net.

Group A is still wide open

Neither side could find the winning formula in the end and that meant settling for a point each.

Chile now have 5 points from their three games and manage to stay unbeaten in second place. Uruguay occupy the final qualification spot currently with just 1 point from their first two games. Group A of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America is going down to the wire.
