A Yerry Mina own goal saw Colombia crash to a 2-1 loss against Peru in the 2021 Copa America group stage on Sunday.

Peru reached the final of the 2019 CONMEBOL Copa America but have won just two of their 12 games since. They got off to a good start in Goiania when they took the lead after 17 minutes.

Sergio Pena converted a Yoshimar Yotun shot that had come back off the post that was truly deserved. This also ended Colombia’s run of seven Copa America games without conceding a goal.

However, Los Cafeteros grabbed an equaliser in the 53rd minute from the penalty spot. Miguel Borja despatched it with ease after he earned the penalty. Borja had tried to go past keeper Pedro Gallese who failed to get the ball and instead fouled the Colombian.

Borja coolly sent the keeper the wrong way to make things all square from 12 yards out.

Colombia had not lost any of their last 10 matches against Peru but that record was brought to a calamitous end. Everton defender Mina scored an own goal in an unfortunate fashion.

A corner kick hit him on the chest and the ball bounced over the line past goalkeeper David Ospina. The keeper failed to stop it from crossing the line in time.

Peru move into third place in Group B of the Copa America with three points from two games, now just one behind Colombia who have played three games.

Colombia star James Rodriguez was left out of the side for the competition. We wonder if this decision might come back to haunt Los Cafeteros.
