Argentina secured a victory over Uruguay at the 2021 Copa America thanks to a winner from Guido Rodriguez in the 13th minute.

Rodriguez, making his first start for his country since June 2019, headed in an attempt that found itself in off the post following a cross by captain Lionel Messi.
Uruguay had a penalty appeal for a foul on striker Edinson Cavani turned down as they failed to register a shot on target in their opening match of the tournament.

Argentina’s win moved them joint top of Group A with Chile on four points.

“We deserved to win,” said Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul.

“We tried to be more compact, to make it more difficult to score against. Upfront, we have monstrous players who can get goals at any moment of the match.”

Uruguay’s next game is against Chile on 21st June. Argentina are next in action against Paraguay on 22 June in the group stages of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America.
