Captain Lionel Messi earned a record-equalling 147th appearance for Argentina as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in the group stage of the Copa America.

Argentina secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America with a victory over Paraguay.

Papu Gomez bagged a goal early on that proved to be the winner. He connected on a pass by Angel Di Maria to put La Albiceleste ahead after just 10 minutes.

Messi equalled Javier Mascherano’s most caps record for the national team. He will be the most-capped player before the end of this tournament.

Argentina join their Group B rivals and defending champions Brazil in the quarterfinals. The Argentinians are currently on top of Group A ahead of Chile. Chile drew 1-1 with Uruguay to also secure their spot in the last 8.

With four matches left to play in Group A, Paraguay have three points, Uruguay one, and Bolivia none.

All three teams have a chance to qualify alongside Argentina and Chile for the Copa America quarterfinals so there is lots to play for still.
