Southampton-vs-BurnleySouthampton vs Burnley – Prediction

0-0 draw, Southampton will need a win here to hold on to their 6th place spot but it will be difficult this week going up against a team that are coming into this game brimming with confidence after pulling off one of the greatest upsets in Premier League history.

It’s going to get difficult for Burnley over the next few weeks with games against Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton and whatever they can milk from these games will prove crucial to their fight for Premier League survival.

We can see this one being a low scoring affair with a 0-0 draw being the most likely possibility. Burnley will sit back while Southampton currently don’t look like a team that can hurt teams with their attacking prowess.

Betting Tips

  • We cannot see a lot of goals this match and so betting on Under 2.5 goals with odds of around 1.9 is our best bet suggestion for this game.
  • The odds of a Southampton win are fairly low at 1.44, draw 4.5 and Burnley win at 8.

Southampton

Graziano-Pelle

Pelle has been on a major goal drought having not scored in his 12 Premier League games (Telegraph)

They just won’t go away, will they? No matter how the rest of the season unfolds and Southampton and their manager Ronald Koeman are my picks for Team and manager of the season respectively.

The Saints are currently 6th in the table 6 points behind United in 4th. Catching up to the teams above them maybe a hard task but if they can fend off Spurs and remain were they are now and qualify for the Europa League that’ll be an achievement in itself.

They come into this match on the back of a 1-1 draw against league leaders Chelsea. Southampton have been having some trouble when it comes to scoring lately with just three goals in their last 7 league games.

A major factor for their barren run comes down to the form of Graziano Pelle, the Italian striker who was in stunning form early on in the season has been on major goal drought having not scored in the last 12 league games.

Southampton has conceded the least amount of goals in the division this season with just 21. Fraser Forster has kept a total of 13 clean sheets which is the highest in the league.

Southampton will be boosted by the return of Eljero Elia after the winger recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of the clash versus Chelsea last week.

Apart from the duo of Jay Rodriguez and Emmanuel Mayuka Koeman has no fresh injury troubles.

Burnley

George-Boyd

Burnley’s man of the moment – George Boyd (Skysports)

The Clarets come into this game after pulling off one of the greatest upsets in the Premier League era. George Boyd’s stunning strike from the edge of the box gave them a much needed 1-0 win over defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

They are currently 18th in table but just one point behind Sunderland in 17th. If they show the same kind of determination and passion they did against Manchester City then they have every chance to staying up this year.

This will be third of their 5 game run against teams in the top 7. Burnley’s last five games are going to be the key were they face the likes of Leicester, West Ham, Hull City and Aston Villa. If they can get 10 points from the 9 games  they have left Burnley should be safe come the end of the season.

Burnley’s away record have been pretty poor this season winning just one of their 14 away games thus far. They have conceded the second most amount of goals in the league this season behind QPR.

Burnley have a miserable record away to Southampton winning just 2 of their last 23 visits to them with the last of those two victories coming in the 2007/08 season when Burnley beat the Saints 1-0 in the Championship.

Sean Dyche should have a fully fit squad to choose from with the only absentee being Matt Taylor who is back in training after recovering from an Achilles injury

Past Meeting

The Last time these two teams met this season Burnley ended up as the unlikely winners thanks to a sole goal from Ashley Barnes in the 73rd minute. Southampton ended up winning 5 of their 6 league games after that loss.

Where they are in the table

 6th – Southampton – 29 games – 50 points – (+19 GD)

18th – Burnley – 29 games – 25 points – (-21 GD)
