Preview

Paris Saint Germain will host Chelsea at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 for the second time in two seasons on Tuesday.

Last season PSG went on to win 3-1 versus Chelsea at home with goals from Lavezzi, David Luis and Javier Pastore against the one goal for Chelsea by Eden Hazard. The win though went in vain as the team got knocked out based on away goals rule as they lost the second leg 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Zlatan-Ibrahimovic

PSG couldn’t have asked for a much worser time to face Chelsea. The team is plagued with injuries with many of the first team players set to miss the clash.

Their recent form hasn’t been great as well winning just 3 of their last 8 games. They are currently third in the French League behind Marseille and Lyon. They had a chance to move to the top of the table but failed to win the match versus Caen despite having a 2-0 lead till the 85th minute.

To be fair to PSG they had to play the final 10 minutes with just 9 men as several players went off injured and Laurent Blanc ran out of subs.

Four players including Yohan Cabaye, Marquinhos, Serge Aurier and Lucas Mora were all injured Saturday and will be missing the clash on Tuesday. Javier Pastore may also be missing from the PSG squad against Chelsea as he is still to recover from his injury.

The most expensive defender of all time, David Luiz, will be excited at the prospect of facing his former club. The central defensive pairing of Luiz and Thiago Silva will play a crucial role in deciding whether PSG go through the quarter-final or not.

PSG at least for the first leg will be looking towards their maverick Swedish striker Zlatlan Ibrahimovic the Kungfu master to find way past the Chelsea who will certainly be set to “Park the bus”.

Diego-Costa-Chelsea

Diego Costa, striker for Chelsea

Chelsea come into this match after narrowly squeezing past Everton 1-0 last Thursday. Chelsea needed an 89th minute goal from Willian to keep up their 7 point led from Manchester City.

Chelsea maybe top of the Premier League table but they haven’t played their best in a long while now. Last season they faced PSG in the Champions League quarters finals and managed to go through to the semi’s based on away goals rule.

It was a close contest last season but this year Chelsea does look the stronger of the two teams with the likes of Fabregas, Courtois and Diego Costa making Chelsea stronger than last year.

Diego Costa is set to return to the Chelsea starting eleven after serving out his ban for Stamping on Liverpool’s Emre Can’s foot in the league Cup Semi-final last month

Mourinho has never won the Champions League with Chelsea and the last time he won it was with Inter in 2010. Mourinho would want to correct this stat and win Chelsea their second Champions League title.

Verdict

Pressure is mounting on Laurent Blanc to get their season back on track so getting knocked out at round of 16 in the Champions League is just not an option.

Blanc has already fired the first shot by joking in press conference that Mourinho was a “Genius” for losing the FA Cup 4th round tie versus Bradford City so that they had a few extra days rest for their Champions league clash.

Mourinho can’t also afford a loss here, they have not looked the strong outfit they had been at the start of the season for the past few weeks so crashing of the Champions League can potentially derail their entire season.

Either way it should be cracker.
