Real Madrid were also the first ever winners of the Champions League, winning the trophy in the 1955/56, they would go on to win 5 consecutive Champions League trophies from 1955/56 to 1959/1960.
Real Madrid for their success both domestically and in Europe was named the FIFA club of the 20th century in 2000.
Real were the 1st team in Spain to score 100 or more points in a single season, a feat they achieved in the 2011/12 season. Real also has the record for scoring the most number of goals in a single season (121 in 2011/12).
It is also the richest club in the world according to Forbes, 2014.
Barca is one among the few clubs in Spain that are owned and operated by the supporters. They are the second most valuable team in the world behind Real Madrid as per Forbes, 2014.
Barca was one of the founding members of the La Liga in 1929 and has never been relegated from the country’s top football division.
Barcelona has had a huge amount of success both domestically and continentally. They have won the La Liga 22 times second only to Real Madrid on the total count. They are the most successful team in the Copa Del Rey winning the competition a record 26 times. They currently present a treat to Real Madrid after winning several times La Liga in a consecutive manner.
Barca has also won the Champions League 4 times with last one coming in the 2010/2011 season.
Founded in the year 1903, Atletico Madrid plays their home matches at the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid. The stadium was named after former club president Vicente Calderon who became president in 1964 and remained so till his death in 1987.
Atletico has won the Spanish Primera Division 10 times; they are the current champions of Spain winning the 2013/14 season by finishing 3 points ahead of eventual runner-up Barcelona.
They have also won the Copa Del Rey 10 times but have never won the Champions League. Atletico has tasted European success in the form of the Europa League which they won in the 2009/10 and the 2011/12 season.
Atletico has a fierce rivalry with Real Madrid and the matches between the two Spanish giants are called the Madrid Derby.
Founded in the 1905, Sevilla playS its home matches at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Andalucia, Spain. Sevilla has played a total of 66 seasons in Spain’s Premier league but has won the league title only once in the 1945/46 season.
They have won the Copa Del Rey a total of five times and the Supercopa De España once in 2007.
Sevilla has had reasonable success in European competitions winning the Europa Cup three times with the last one coming in the 2013/14 campaign.
Sevilla has a healthy rivalry with Real Betis and matches between the two are called the Seville Derby.
Nicknamed “Los Che” Valencia is the fifth most successful club in the Spain in terms of the number of La Liga titles won.
Valencia has won 6 La Liga titles with the last of the six coming in the 2003/04 season. They have also won the Copa Del Raey a total of seven times with the last one in 2007/08.
Valencia had reached two consecutive Champions League finals in 1999/00 and 2000/01 but lost the finals both times. Valencia’s sole UEFA Cup success came in the 2003/04 season.
Valencia has a healthy rivalry with Levante UD. In the 2013/14 season they could only finish 8th in the league.
Villarreal’s first season in the Spanish Primera Division came in the 1998/99 season. Even though their history in the La Liga has been short they have been a reasonably successful club in the last decade and a half.
They finished runner-up in the 2007/08 season and has reached the Champions League semi-finals on one occasion in the 2005/06 season.
Villarreal has a healthy rivalry with CD Castellon as they are both teams from the Province of Castellon. They have won the Spanish Segunda Division 3 times with the last title coming in the 2012/13 season.

Founded in the year 1904, Malaga CF plays their home matches at the La Rosaleda stadium which houses a capacity of just more than 30,000.
Malaga has spent 33 seasons in the Spanish Primera Division and their best finish during this time in the La Liga was 4th which they achieved in the 2011/12 season.
Malaga has been quarter-finalists both in the Champions League (2012/13) and in the Europa League (2002/03 season).
Malaga finished 11th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
Eibar won the Segunda Division in the 2013/14 season thereby earning the right to play in the Spanish Primera Division aka the La Liga for the 2014/15 season.
2014/15 will be the club’s first season in Spain’s top footballing Division.
Eibar have won the Segunda Division once in 2013/14. They have also won the Segunda Division B and the Tercera Division title 3 times and 7 times respectively.
Eibar are the smallest club to have ever played in Spain’s top football division, and also the only one with no debts.
Espanyol play their home matches at the Estadio Comella El-Prat stadium in Barcelona, Spain. Espanyol’s best finish in the Spanish Primera Division has been 3rd which they managed on four seasons with the last being in 1986/87.
Espanyol has won the Copa Del Rey four times with last of those coming in 2006. When it comes to European Competitions Espanyol has finished runners-up in the UEFA Cup two times, once in 1987/88 and more recently in 2006/07.
Espanyol finished 14th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
Rayo has spent most of their history in the top two divisions of Spanish football. They have played in the Spanish Primera Division otherwise known as La Liga for 16 seasons and in the Segunda Division for 34 seasons.
Rayo finished 12th in the 2013/14 La Liga Season.
Celta de Vigo
Vigo has spent a total of 49 seasons in Spain’s Primera Division; their best finish during this time in the league was 4th which they achieved in the 2002/03 season.
They did play in the Champions League for the 2003/04 but were knocked out by English club Arsenal in the first group round.
Celta Vigo has three Segunda Division titles in their trophy case with the last one coming in the 1991/92 season.
They have been finalists on four occasions in the Copa Del Rey but have never won it.
Celta Vigo finished 9th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
La Real were one of the founding members of the Spanish Primera Division in 1929. They have spent a total of 68 seasons in the La Liga and during their time have won two La Liga titles in the 1980/81 season and the 1981/82 season.
La Real also has two Copa Del Rey titles to their credit. Real Sociedad has a good rivalry with Athletic Bilbao and the matches between the two are called Basque Derbies.

Athletic Club Bilbao
Athletic play their home matches at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. They are one among the only three clubs to have never been relegated from Spain’s Primera Division.
Athletic are one of the highly successful clubs in Spain with 8 La Liga titles last of which came in 1983/84 and 24 Copa Del Rey titles (Second best team in Competitions history).
Apart from their Domestic Success they have also been two time runners-up of the UEFA Cup in 1976/77 and 2011/12.
Athletic Club has a healthy rivalry with Real Sociedad and the matches between the two are called “Basque Derbies”.
Athletic Bilbao finished 4th in the 2013/14 season.
Cordoba’s La Liga career spans just 9 seasons long and the best finish they have achieved till date has been the 5th place in the 1964/65 season.
Cordoba won promotion for the 2014/15 season after winning the Segunda promotion playoffs in the 2013/14 season. The 2014/15 marks their return to Spanish top flight football after a gap of 42 years.
They finished seventh in the 2013/14 Segunda Division.
Getafe’s first season in the Spanish Primera Division was in 2004/05 but since then Getafe has never been relegated back to the Segunda Division.
Getafe has been runners-up in the Copa Del Rey on two occasions, once in the 2006/07 season and the other time in 2007/08.
In the 2006/07 the team qualified for Europe for the 1st time by securing a spot in the Europa League after finishing runner-up in the Copa Del Rey.
Getafe’s best performance in Europa came in the 2007/08 season when they reached the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup before getting knocked out Bayern Munich.
Getafe finished 13th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
Elche has spent majority of their time in the top two divisions of Spanish football and played 21 seasons in the La Liga.
They have been Copa Del Rey runners-up once in their history in 1969 when they lost the final to Atletico de Bilbao. Getafe have also won the Segunda Division title twice once in 1958/59 and the other in 2012/13.
Elche’s best La Liga finish came in the 1963/94 season when they finished 5th overall.
Deportiva La Coruna
Deportiva La Coruna are a former one time La Liga Champion winning the title in the 1999/00 season.
They have also won the Copa Del Rey two times, once in 1994/95 and the second time in 2001/02. Deportiva has played 43 seasons in the Spanish Primera Division.
Deportiva has a strong rivalry with Celta Vigo and the matches between the two are called Galician Derbies.
Deportiva won the promotion for the 2014/15 La Liga season after finishing second in the Segunda Division in the 2013/14 season.
Almeria last only spent 6 seasons in the La Liga and their best finish during their time there was an 8th place finish in the 2007/08 season.
Almeria reached the Copa Del Rey Semi-finals in the 2010/11 but was also relegated from the La Liga in the same season.
The Club finished 17th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
Levante play their home matches at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium in Valencia, Spain. Levante has played a total of 10 seasons in the La Liga and their highest finish during this time was a 6th place finish in 2011/12.
Levante’s best performance in Europe came in the 2012-13 Europa League campaign when they reached the round of 16 before getting knocked out by Rubin Kazan.
Levante finished 10th in the 2013/14 La Liga season.
Granada has spent a total of 21 seasons in the La-Liga with the 6th being their best finish till date. They have been a Copa Del Rey runner-up in the 1959 edition of the tournament.
Granada has also been a three time winner of the Segunda Division.
