2012/13

Nearly three years into his managerial stint with Aston Villa Paul Lambert was shown the door after a disappointing 2014/15 season that sees them currently sitting 18th in the table with just 13 games to go.

Lambert was given the top job at Villa just before the start of the 2012/13 season. The Villains played their first match under Lambert against West Ham but ended up losing the game 1-0. The first season under Lambert was regarded to be a successful one with the team finishing 15th in the league.

Lambert was widely praised for his first season with Villa not only for staying up or reaching the League Cup semi-finals but for doing it with the youngest team in the Premier League.

2013/14

The 2013/14 campaign, the second season under Lambert started brightly. The Villains started the Premier League campaign by beating Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium but as the season progressed the team started to struggle and were criticized for being a team with no plan B.

Despite the criticisms Villa managed to replicate their 15th place finish from the previous season.

2014/15 – The end

2014/15 started brilliantly for Villa as they picked up 10 points from their first four games beating the likes of Stoke City and Liverpool in the process. It was one of their best starts to a season in recent memory.

After their victory against Liverpool the team started to stutter failing to score in the next five matches. 25 games into the season Villa had managed to score only 12 goals in 25 matches.

The loss to fellow Relegation contenders Hull City 2-0 which saw them slip to 18th in the table on game week 25 decided the fate of Paul Lambert as he was sacked officially on the 11th of February.

In the 115 games Villa played under Paul Lambert the team managed to win 34 games while drawing 26 and losing 55. Lambert recorded a poor win percentage of 29.5 during his time with Villa.

The departure of Paul Lambert meant that the Premier league was without a Scottish manager for the first time in 30 years.

Hope for the best

Former Spurs and Newly appointed Villa Coach Tim Sherwood

Former Spurs and Newly appointed Villa Coach Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood had a highly successful playing career appearing for Premier League Clubs such as Portsmouth, Blackburn and Tottenham in a career spanning 18 years.

Sherwood joined Spurs as a coach in 2008 under then manager Harry Redknapp. Sherwood would remain with Spurs as coach till 2013 after which he was promoted as the first team manager in Dec, 2013.

Sherwood had a highly successful record with Spurs boasting a win percentage of 50 from a total of 28 matches.

Despite producing a good second half of the season Sherwood was sacked at the end. Ironically the last match Sherwood managed Spurs was against Aston Villa and managed to win it 2-0.

Sherwood’s first match in charge of the Villains will be against Stoke City at home on the 21st February.

He has 13 games to start making Villa score and more importantly pick up points. Luckily for Lambert he has a team full of talent with the likes of Christian Bentenke and Gabby Agbonlahor leading the line. What Sherwood has to do is to instill confidence within the squad.

What Sherwood doesn’t have is time, he has to turn Villa’s season around in just 13 games. Let’s see what Sherwood does at Villa. Good Luck to him!
