Switzerland vs Poland – Prediction

Swiss-vs-Poland

Who will it be?

Poland Win – (2-1) – This is the first time that both Switzerland and Poland have made it into Knockout rounds of the European Championships. The winner of their tie will face either Croatia or Portugal in the quarter-finals. Poland are yet to concede a goal in the tournament while the only time Swiss has conceded till now was through a penalty against Romania.

Fixture Overview:

Match 37 Switzerland X Poland Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Saint Etienne 3 P.M CET, 25-06-2016

Betting Tips – Switzerland vs Poland

  • Poland to Win: – 2.65 (888 Sport)

It is the opinion and we are going with the masses with this one. The teams look equals on paper with both their attacking units failing to click till now. Poland should win even though it wont be a stroll in the park.

  • Anytime Goalscorer – Robert Lewandowski – 3.13 (Betvictor)

He has been on a uncharacteristic goal drought for his country having not scored or even put a shot on target in this tournament. However someone of the quality of Lewandowski is bound to click at sometime and Saturday might just be the day.

  • Over 1.5 Goals – 1.70 (188 Bet)

I was tempted to put my money on Over 2.5 and backing our scoreline prediction but since Over 1.5 has pretty decent odds we’ll go with the safer bet and Over 1.5.

  • Match Specials – Lewandowski to outscore Haris Seferovic in Normal time – 2.88 (Paddypower)

A big shout out to Paddypower who have provided some really good match specials for this particular game. Anyways we don’t see Seferovic starting the game and expect Lewandowski to score so yeah that’s it!

Route to the Knockouts

  • Switzerland have qualified for the knockouts as the runners-up from Group A. The Swiss were expected to get around 4-6 points & qualify and that’s exactly what they did. After winning their opening game against debutantes Albania 1-0 they went on draw the next two games against Romania & hosts France 1-1 & 0-0 respectively. Fabian Schar & Leverkusen striker Admir Mehmedi has scored one goal apiece and are Swiss’ joint top scorers.
  • Poland carried over their qualifying form into the tournament finals and qualified for the knockouts as the runners-up of Group C. They registered two 1-0 wins against Northern Ireland & Ukraine while their game against defending World Champions Germany in 0-0 draw. They finished the group stage having not conceded a single goal and were relegated to 2nd place despite accumulating 7 points only because of Germany’s superior Goal Difference.

Switzerland

Granit-Xhaka

Arsenal’s latest acquisition Granit Xhaka certainly looks like someone whose worthy of his price tag

For a team that has never qualified for the knockout rounds of the European Championship they’ve already set a new bench mark for themselves. Unlike their previous appearances in the competition in 1996, 2004 & 2008 this is a Swiss team that comprises of talent who are plying their trade for top European clubs. The one area where Switzerland need to improve is their finishing, Haris Seferovic has been guilty of missing several chances against Albania & Romania and ended up starting from the bench against France. The lack of options to replace him is apparent and will be interesting to see if he regains his spot in the starting 11 or continue with Embolo. 4-2-3-1 has been their preferred formation till now with Admir Mehmedi & Xherdan Shaqiri providing the attacking threat from the wings. Both of Swiss’ two goals in the tournament have come from corners. In their opening game against Albania Fabian Schar headed in a Xherdan Shaqiri corner while against Romania Admir Mehmedi converted a half cleared corner. Arsenal’s summer acquisition Granit Xhaka has been their best player so far most notable being his performance against France. Switzerland have won only once & lost four of their previous 10 matches against Poland with the last of those being a 4-0 loss in a friendly played in 2001. Heading into the game against Poland head coach Vladimir Petkovic is expected to start the same 11 as he did against France in the final group game. The worrying part for Petkovic however is the face that most of his preferred starting 11 players including 19yr old Breel Embolo, Granit Xhaka & Valon Behrami are on yellow cards and one more could see them missing a quarter final tie if they manage to overcome Poland.

Overall Bet Tips

  • Top Scorer
  1. Admir Mehmedi – 3.50 (Betvictor)
  2. Fabian Schar – 4.00 (Betvictor)
  3. Haris Seferovic – 9.00 (Betvictor)
  4. Xherdan Shaqiri – 9.00 (Coral)

Admir Mehmedi has been by far their best attacking threat among the forward trio of himself, Shaqiri & Seferovic/Embolo. We don’t see Poland conceding too many and the Round of 16’s will probably be the end of their Euro 2016 so it’s safe to back Mehmedi as Swiss top scorer for now especially since he already has a goal to his name.

  • Overall Finish/Stage of Elimination
  1. Round of 16’s – 1.80 (Betfair)
  2. Quarter – 3.20 (Ladbrokes)
  3. Semi’s – 10.00 (Bet 365)
  4. Runner-up – 26.00 (Betvictor)
  5. Winner – 53.00 (188 Bet)

As we had already stated during our Group Stage predictions we can’t see the Swiss making it past the Round of 16’s. It’s not as if they cannot beat Poland but it will be difficult especially since they haven’t been convincing against equals or stronger opponents.

Poland

Milik-and-Lewandowski

Arkadiusz Milik & Robert Lewandowski – Europe’s most lethal strike Partnership during Euro Qualifiers (Pic Cou: Youtube.com)

Like their opponents on Saturday this will be first time that Poland will be kicking off a knockout round game in the European Championship. For a team that has never won a game in this competition in their previous two attempts in 2008 & 2012 they’ve already won 2 and held the current world champions Germany to a draw. For many Poland were a one man team heading into this tournament and that one man being Robert Lewandowski who had been the top scorer with 13 goals in qualifying and had slotted in 42 goals for Bayern Munich in the 2015/16 season. It’s safe to say that Lewandowski hasn’t had a impact till now (no shot on target in 270 minutes) but others in the team like Jakub Blaszczykowski, Bartosz Kapustka & Kamil Glik has stepped up their game. For Poland their best asset till now has been their defense which is yet to concede a goal and limited the Germans to just three shots on target in their 2nd group game. Another piece of interesting information is that Poland have never scored more than a single goal in any of their previous 9 games in the Euro’s. Jakub Blaszczykowski has arguably been Poland’s best player till now and has been directly involved in both their goals so far – scoring one and assisting the other. Poland have won both their previous two competitive matches against Switzerland 2-0 both being in 1980 Euro qualifiers. Wojciech Szczesny remains unavailable for selection with his thigh injury so Lukasz Fabianski will once again appear in goal for Poland. Bartosz Kapustka who was Poland’s best player in their tie against Northern Ireland will sit out of this game as a result of picking up a 2nd yellow card against Ukraine.

Overall Bet Tips

  • Top Scorer
  1. Robert Lewandowski – 2.00 (Betvictor)
  2. Arkadiusz Milik – 2.00 (Betvictor)
  3. Jakub Blaszczykowski – 2.00 (Betvictor)

While it’s true that Lewandowski has struggled and hasn’t managed a single shot on target but we expect the prolific striker to make an impact against the Swiss and will back him to end up as their top scorer by the end of this tournament.

  • Overall Finish/Stage of Elimination
  1. Round of 16’s – 2.20 (Bet 365)
  2. Quarter – 3.00 (Ladbrokes)
  3. Semi’s – 8.00 (Betfair)
  4. Runner-up – 15.00 (Betway)
  5. Winner – 29.00 (888 Sport)

Once again we are backing our group stage predictions and back Poland to make into the quarters but that’s where their journey will end as up next it will either Croatia or Portugal.

Past Meeting

The last time these two teams met was in a friendly in November 2014 and the game ended 2-2 with Artur Jedrzejczyk and Arkadiusz Milik scoring for Poland & Fabian Frei and Josip Drmic scoring for Swiss.

Final Verdict

Both the teams are more or less equal in paper and we should see a surprisingly open game. As a bettor if you are hoping to find a tournament top scorer or a eventual winner of the tournament from this tie then i suggest you close this browser after commenting your prediction below.
